The time of year that Keats called the ‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’, Autumn is a season known for its colourful trees, falling leaves, shortening days and its harvests.
For landscape painters, the autumn season provides a whole new aesthetic and chance to explore a different colour pallette. Perhaps the most striking autumn visual is the turning of the leaves. Autumn landscape art explores the various states of trees, from bright yellows and reds to bare branches and golden brown leaves resting on the ground. In addition to colour, there is a marked change in light. The nights begin to draw in after the autumn equinox and the sun appears lower in the sky casting longer shadows on the landscape.
Autumn provides plenty of inspiration for wildlife artists too. For some of our British wildlife it’s a busy time of year. Grey squirrels spend more time foraging on the ground, the rutting season begins for red deer and starlings are in abundance as more arrive from Northern Europe. Trees & bushes laden with berries attract a variety of birds including flocks of redwings, fieldfares, thrushes & blackbirds.
Here is a collection of autumn-inspired paintings from our artists on Acquire Art. You’ll find autumn landscape art, abstract art with autumnal colours, and wildlife art depicting animals associated with the season.
